The Newington Police Department has enrolled in Project Lifesaver which is a town-wide emergency response locator service capable of finding individuals diagnosed with cognitive impairments which may cause them to wander and become lost.
When a caregiver notifies the Newington Police Department (860-666-8445) that a Project Lifesaver client has wandered, specially trained Newington PD Project Lifesaver personnel are immediately dispatched, and while en route to the client’s last reported location, activates a vehicle mounted locator tracking system and begins searching. A hand-held mobile locator tracking unit is used for search areas inaccessible by vehicle. The transmitter signal can be tracked on the ground or in the air from distances of up to several miles.
Thanks to the generosity of local businesses and individuals, Massage Envy (West Hartford, South Windsor and Farmington locations), Connecticut Bail Bonds Group, William and Susan Sonstrom, Jill Price and Elizabeth D. Ong and Vincent C. Howen, along with funds from the Chief’s Donation account, the proper equipment has been purchased and Newington Officers have been trained to start this initiative immediately.
If you are a caregiver for someone who would benefit from this life saving program, please complete one of the appropriate enrollment application forms which can be found below, or at the Newington Police Department. All completed forms should be returned to Detective Shannon LaChance in-person at NPD headquarters. If you have any questions about the program or need additional information, Det. LaChance can be reached at 860.594.6217.
