Dog Licenses

All dogs living in Newington over the age of 6 months must be licensed annually at the Town Clerk’s Office. Dogs must wear the tag at all times - a dog without a tag is presumed to be unlicensed and is not protected by law.

A current rabies vaccination must be presented at the time of licensing as well as a certificate from the veterinarian indicating that the animal has been spayed or neutered.

Any blind, deaf or mobility impaired person who is an owner or keeper of a dog trained to guide and assist him shall receive a license and dog tag at no fee.

Leash/Code of Ordinances

Dogs must remain under the proper control of the owner and must be kept on a leash. Owners of roaming dogs are liable to prosecution.

The Newington Code of Ordinances stipulates that in order to promote public health and welfare, dog litter must be removed from public and private property. Failure to clean up after your animal shall be punishable by a fine.

Fees

June is “dog month.” This means that each year during the month of June animal owners must renew their dog’s license to remain current. Registering your dog can be done in person or through the mail. The dog license is valid from July 1 through June 30. There is a $1 penalty fee incurred for each month that the license fails to be renewed.

Type of Dog
Fee
Spayed/Neutered $8
Unaltered $19

A person who moves to Newington whose dog was previously licensed in another Connecticut town may transfer the registration for $1. A lost tag can be replaced for $0.50.
