Oversized / Bulk Items

Beginning July 1st the town will be moving to a user fee based structure for oversized/bulk waste collection. Currently the fee for collection is $25 per stop for up to two items. There will be an additional charge for items such as mattresses, box springs and tires, please see fees below.  When contacting Trash Away (860)-229-1164 to schedule a collection residents will now be required to make payment at that time.  Payments may be made by credit card over the phone, by mailing a check or paying by cash at Trash Away, 21 Christian Lane, New Britain, CT 06051.  

Residents may also bring mattress, boxsprings and televisions to the Town's Transfer Station, 2045 Main St, to be recycled for no cost.

Residential Homes

Oversized/bulk collection for residential homes is completed on Thursdays of each week. Residents are allowed 2 items per week and must call the Town’s Sanitation contractor, Trash Away (860)-229-1164 to schedule a collection.  Deadline for scheduling a pick up it Tuesday at 3:30.  When leaving a voicemail please leave a detailed message with the address and items to be picked up, the contractor will return your call with the date for collection.  Items should be placed out curbside the night before as the routes do start early. Collection stops are limited to 165 per week therefore scheduling is done on a first come first serve basis.

Condominium Complexes

Oversized/bulk collection for condominiums is completed on Thursdays of each week. Residents are allowed 2 items per week and must call the Town’s Sanitation contractor, Trash Away (860)-229-1164  to schedule a collection.  Deadline for scheduling a pick up it Tuesday at 3:30.  When leaving a voicemail please leave a detailed message with the location i.e bulk area or dumpster number and items to be picked up, the contractor will return your call with the date for collection.  Items should be placed out at the designated location the night before as the collection routes start early.  Collection stops are limited to 165 per week therefore scheduling is done on a first come first serve basis.

Fees

$25 per stop (maximum of two items per stop) not including televisions, there is a separate fee for televisions, see below. 

Additional charges:

  • Mattress or Box spring -$35.00 each
  • Automobile Tire - $10.00 each

Televisions charges:

  • First television - $11.00
  • Additional television  - $5.00

Acceptable items - Items must be able to be loaded into refuse truck by 2 people.

  • Wooden and upholstered furniture
  • Sofas, couches
  • Desk
  • Tables
  • Chairs
  • mattresses, box springs, TVs (over 19 inches), for an additional fee
  • carpeting (cut into 4 feet lengths and rolled, tied- 5 rolls allowed per week)
  • Branches, lumber not to exceed 4 inches in diameter, (cut into 4 feet lengths bundled and tied- 5 bundles allowed per week)

Items Not Accepted

Hazardous materials such as oil based paints, asbestos, chemicals of any kind. Motor vehicle batteries (may be disposed of at Town Landfill). 

Construction and demolition debris (roofing shingles, sheetrock, etc.) Waste Oil (in sealed containers may be brought to the Town Landfill)
