[ARCHIVED] Extreme Fire Danger/Open Burning Ban

Office of Emergency Management New Flash

Due to the extremely high fire danger in our area, and the close proximity to one of Connecticut’s largest wildfires, all open burning is strictly prohibited in Newington until further notice.

Open burning is defined as the burning of any matter in such a manner that the products of combustion resulting from the burning are emitted directly into the ambient air without passing through a stack or flue.

Residents are reminded that Chapter 188 – Burning, Open contained within the Code of Newington prohibits open burning without a permit.  Additionally, Chapter 188 prohibits open burning, regardless of a permit, during periods of extreme fire danger.

Prohibited activities regarding open burning include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Burning of leaves and brush
  • Use of fire pits
  • Outdoor grilling (charcoal/open flames) – propane and natural gas grills are exempt

Over the last two months, Connecticut has experienced severely dry conditions and lack of rain, which has increased the threat of fires to originate and develop rapidly.  With no rain forecasted over the next 5 days and the presence of warmer temperatures, lower relative humidity and gusting winds, it is expected that an extreme fire danger/Red Flag Warning will remain in effect until further notice.

Additionally, residents are asked to exercise extreme caution, especially when disposing of smoking materials outdoors.

We are asking the public to work together with first responders to protect and ensure the safety of our community.
